What we can treat

Thread veins, spider veins and minor varicose veins can be treated effectively by injection sclerotherapy at Surrey Day Surgery.

Assessment and Treatment

You will be assessed by a vascular surgeon to ensure the veins are suitable for sclerotherapy or if surgery may be more suitable.  Sometimes an ultrasound scan is recommended to exclude underlying venous disease. Once the surgeon is satisfied with the diagnosis, the treatment will begin.  A very fine needle is used to inject a sclerosing fluid, which irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to block and then re-absorb. At the first appointment you may only have a few veins injected to test the concentration of sclerosant fluid in case it isn't strong enough. Another appointment will then be made for you for a few weeks time when the full area will be treated. A compression dressing is applied for 24-72 hours depending on the size of the veins.

Results

Many fine veins will vanish invisibly but sometimes a brown stain and a slight lump is left which will slowly fade.  Sometimes more veins appear before the situation is controlled.
