Gastroscopy

What is it?

This is the examination of the inner lining of the gullet (oesophagus), stomach and the first part of the small bowel (duodenum).

The examination takes 5- 10 minutes and most patients tolerate this procedure with a local anaesthetic spray which makes the mouth and throat numb, however, sedation is available if necessary.

Reasons for having this investigation

Gastroscopy is indicated for investigation of different symptoms including heartburn, indigestion, upper abdominal pain, difficulty in swallowing etc. It is also an important tool in investigating anaemia.
